OLUOKUN EPIPHANY (’88 Benin city) poem by Simpa Omoluabi

OLUOKUN EPIPHANY (’88 Benin city) by Simpa Omoluabi

At age four I witnessed the invocation of an Olokun
He the devotee that invoked the divinity
Was mysteriously made not to see nor hear the deity
A sight of divine terror that rose ‘bout seven feet tall
With a shout angrier than roars of angry lions
Vibrating like a rattling spear just struck into the earth
Right in front of the votary that invoked the god
But my eyes were divinely bespectacled
In some remotely divine Oluokun ablution
Washing off the blindspot off my eyes
To behold the divine spectacle
Dilating my pupils, widening my mouth in awe.
